This blog is meant to chronicle exciting developments and interesting facts in the field of entomology, and the insects that comprise the field.
My interest in the field of entomology is roughly 70% humanitarian and 30% agricultural. What does that mean, you ask? Well, I want to work with people in undeveloped regions of the world and help them learn the benefits of protecting themselves against various diseases that are readily transmitted via insects (e.g. malaria, yellow & dengue fever, sleeping sickness, chagas disease, etc.) and also by teaching local farmers how to yield more successful crops using Integrated Pest Management. I want to work with towns people directly, teaching them the benefits of mosquito nets, insect repellents, and healthier methods of utilizing their water sources. I suppose I could describe this as an interest in insect-related outreach work.
Now don't get me wrong-- I am not about killing insects. I just want to educate people of some of the dangers they may face from certain insects due to their lifestyles (note: I am using that term loosely) and where they may live in the world. I am one of the nerds out there that absolutely adores insects and is entirely fascinated by them. In fact, I have raised 2 Vietnamese Walking Sticks, a Spiny Flower Mantid, 3 Giant Costa Rican Stag Beetles, a Tarantula, and various moths and butterflies. Again, as I said, I love insects.
If you have any questions regarding insects, feel free to email me. Hope to have some good discussions ahead!
